C’è voluto un po’, più di quanto pensassimo, ma con un titolo che fa riferimento ad una soap opera c’è di sicuro un dramma di mezzo… sangue, dolcezza, lacrime ed orgoglio : Umi presenta Kauli Seadi in “Novela das 8″!
Negli ultimi quattro anni Kauli ed i suoi amici hanno girato il mondo  in cerca di vento, onde ed azione. Molte delle sessioni che hanno avuto sono state filmate: dall’HD alla telecamera al telefonino. Ma cosa fare di oltre 400 ore di film?! Non certo qualcosa da mostrare nelle sere dopo una giornata di surf o facendo ricerca e sviluppo per il tuo sponsor.
Kauli: «Abbiamo talmente tanto materiale, buone sessioni, sessioni divertenti, sessioni di merda, e persino un’uscita enorme a Jaws. Il mio amico Martin  Carvalho, che inizialmente aveva intenzione di tirare fuori un film, è diventato pazzo con tutte quelle ore di registrazione, specialmente quando il suo computer si è guastato e ha dovuto riniziare da capo! Non sapevo proprio cosa fare, che tutte quelle ore sarebbero finite in un armadietto impolverato? La mia fortuna è cambiata quando Brendan Pyatt di Umi ha deciso di prendersi cura del progetto. Brendan è stato un buon amico sin da quando venne per la prima volta in casa mia in Brasile per fare un servizio nel 2004 e lui e la sua squadra hanno lavorato dietro tutte quelle ore di filmati. Ora possiamo finalmente vedere il risultato attraverso una serie di 7 divertenti clips. Dal momento che fare queste clips è stato così drammatico, abbiamo deciso di chiamare il tutto ‘Novela das  8’, che è il titolo della più famosa soap opera brasiliana. Il sottotitolo “Vale a pena ver de novo” significa infatti “vale la pena vederlo di nuovo” , che è un termine che usano in Brasile per le migliori telenovelas, di cui sicuramente faranno una replica perché alla gente sono piaciute molto. Novela das 8 mostra il mio viaggio: differenti spots, differenti stili, differenti attrezzature, stesso surfer.
Abbiamo iniziato la serie con Maui, il posto che definisco la mia scuola di vita: Maui è sicuramente una delle mecche per il windsurf. E’ il posto dove i professionisti si ritrovano per fare i servizi fotografici ed allenarsi e fui molto felice di andarci la prima volta nel 1999 e surfare le famose onde hawaiane sopra i corallli e le grotte marine! La prima volta sono stato quattro mesi di seguito per fare pratica e questo mi ha aiutato molto perché il livello degli altri surfer mi ha spinto molto a migliorare. Maui è stata la mia scuola di vita, è stato li dove  ho imparato a vivere da solo e a fare le cose che non avevo mai fatto a casa, tipo cucinare, fare la spesa, pulire e lavarmi i vestiti…. così tanto lavoro man! Fortunatamente avevo 30 magliette per cui lavavo una volta al mese… ah, ah, ah! Non l’ho detto mai a nessuno prima , ma ho imparato a cucinare la pasta a Maui ! Fu quello che io e Charles Boggis  mangiammo ogni giorno per quattro mesi, pasta con la salsa Prego, l’unica ricetta che conoscevamo!»

Novela das 8 – Maui Part 1
It has taken some time, more than expected, but with a title referring to a soap opera there’s bound to be some drama involved… Blood, sweat, tears and pride: umi presents Kauli Seadi in Novela das 8.
The last four years Kauli Seadi and his friends have travelled the world in search of wind, waves and action. Many of the sessions they had were captured on film: from HD to camcorder to mobile phone. But what to do with over 400 hours of film? Not something you just edit in the evenings after a day of sailing or doing R&D for your sponsors. Kauli: ‘We had so much footage, of good sessions, fun session, crappy sessions, even a monster session in Jaws. My friend Martin Carvalho, who was initially going to make a film out of it, got crazy with all the hours of tape, especially when his computer crashed and he had to start all over again. I didn’t know what to do, would all these hours of tape just end up in some dusty cabinet? My luck changed when Brendan Pyatt from umi decided to take care of the project. Brendan has been a good friend since he first came to my house in Brazil to do a shoot with me back in 2004 and him and his team worked their way through all these hours of tape. Now we can finally show the result, brought out in a series of seven fun clips. Since making these series was so dramatic, we decided to call it ‘Novela das 8’, which is the name of the most famous Brazilian soap opera. The subtitle ‘Vale a pena ver de novo’ means it’s worth seeing again, and is a term they use in Brazil for the best novelas, of which they would have a replay because people really liked it. Novela das 8 shows my voyage: different spots, different styles, different gear, one rider.’
We kick-off the series with Maui, the place Kauli describes as his ‘school of life’: ‘Maui is definitely one of the Mecca’s of windsurfing. It’s the place where all pro sailors meet to do photo shoots and train, and I was super happy to be able to go there in 1999 for the first time and sail the famous Hawaiian waves over the corals and caves! My first years I was staying there for over four months at a time to practice, and it helped me a lot because the level of the other sailors was pushing me so much. Maui was my school of life, it was where I learnt to really live on my own, do the things that I never do at home, stuff like cooking, shop for food, clean the house, wash my clothes… So much work man! Luckily I had 30 t-shirts so I could do the washing only once a month haha. I haven’t told this to anyone before, but I learnt to make pasta in Maui. It was what me and Charles Boggis ate every day for four months, pasta with Prego sauce, the only recipe we knew!’
